The second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs came to an end with Justin Thomas holding up two trophies and wearing two accessories on his wrist! On his left, what looked to be a Rolex Sea-Dweller (Ref: 126600-0001) in stainless steel, and on his right a Whoop Strap 3.0 fitness tracker in Arctic White. Thomas held off a hot Patrick Cantlay, who has been on WOTW before, to win by three strokes and go into the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed.
Let’s start off with the left wrist, a Rolex Sea-Dweller in stainless steel. The Sea-Dweller has become a very popular watch lately, seeing more of them on wrists where we might have seen its smaller sibling the Submariner. From a distance, the two look similar, but the larger (40mm vs 43mm) and more capable Sea-Dweller has been seen more frequently on the wrists of PGA Tour players.
The Sea-Dweller has its signature helium escape valve on the side of the case for saturation diving. The slow decompression process, while diving, was causing the crystals on the watch to pop off, so a spring-loaded valve was designed to slowly release those pressured gases. The Sea-Dweller utilizes Rolex’s Calibre 3235 movement that was designed in house for a high level of performance and 70hrs of power reserve. After the 3235 receives its certification from the COSC, it is then installed in the case and tested a second time, by Rolex, to ensure it is operating with the precision they demand. The 3235 also features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement and Paracchrom hairspring to increase the efficiency of the movement by 15 percent. The Sea-Dweller’s case and bracelet are made from Rolex’s own 904L Oystersteel. Oystersteel offers superb corrosion resistance from saltwater.
On JT’s right wrist was a Whoop Strap 3.0 in Arctic White that we have also started seeing more on tour. Whoop Strap 3.0 is a fitness tracking device that monitors your heart rate, and other variables, 100 times a second. This level of monitoring allows it to know when you are working out, golfing, sitting, or even sleeping. Whoop is a membership-based fitness and body tracking system that uses the Strap 3.0 to monitor the amount of strain you put on your body during workouts, recovery time, and even sleep patterns to help you get the most out of your fitness plan. The membership plans also offer you the option of competing against other users using Whoop to stay motivated.
The Whoop Strap 3.0’s case is made of what looks like composite or plastic and is waterproof to 20 meters. The side of the case has LED lights to show battery life and a battery life of up to 5 days. The ProKnit straps are designed to be easy to clean, easy to change, and waterproof. You can monitor your analytics in real-time on the phone app and on your desktop computer. Whoop did come up with a great way to recharge the Strap 3.0 when sleeping, you attach a small battery pack to the strap. This battery pack is charged, through a USB cable, and then snapped on to the strap so you don’t have to take it off and lose minutes or hours of data.
