President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign continues to grow, adding a handful of aides devoted to ensuring the 2020 GOP convention is free of any anti-Trump mayhem.
The new hires will help run the campaign’s delegate and party organization arm, which is waging an elaborate nationwide campaign to ensure the delegates selected to attend the nominating convention are staunch White House allies — not Never Trump Republicans. The group will be focused on delving into the granular state-by-state battles that will ensue in the coming months and which will determine the composition of the convention delegation.
According to a campaign news release announcing the hires set to be made public Friday, the group will also be “tasked with organizing the country’s state, county and local Republican parties, managing the delegate selection and ballot access process, and executing the national convention whip operation.”
Joining the campaign will be former White House official Nick Trainer and David Huguenel, who most recently worked at the Republican consulting firm Jamestown Associates. Former RNC officials Josh Findlay and Ashley Walukevich will also be coming aboard.
The effort, which is being spearheaded by senior campaign aides Bill Stepien and Justin Clark, is aimed at avoiding the circus-like environment of the 2016 GOP convention, when anti-Trump delegates — many of whom supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — waged an unsuccessful but distracting last-ditch push to deprive the real estate mogul of the Republican nomination.

In the months before the convention, Cruz outmaneuvered Trump by organizing at a series of delegate selection contests — a process that resulted in many of the senator’s supporters earning slots at the convention.
