Today at Commission, Orbán’s anti-Soros law

Commissioners will next week discuss how to respond to Viktor Orbán.

In a short but concise Commission midday briefing, spokesman Alexander Winterstein announced the Commission will discuss the spat between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Central European University.

On Tuesday evening the Hungarian parliament amended a higher education bill that will stop the George Soros-funded university from granting both Hungarian and U.S. degrees.

Winterstein announced that the college of commissioners will discuss the issue next Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Commission said it was not ready to discuss the situation in Hungary as the bill had not yet been adopted. Winterstein said the Commission “will now analyze the situation,” likely meaning it will check if the bill respects EU rules.

A Commission source said it will be up to Frans Timmermans, the first vice president in charge of the rule of law, to handle the case.
