MIAMI BEACH, FL — A 32-year-old man awaiting extradition from New York City back to Florida for the murder of an elderly Miami Beach resident told investigators a chilling tale of being a serial killer who has killed in three different states, according to police.
Nicholas Brent Gibson was taken into custody in New York on Sunday and later met with Miami Beach detectives, when he allegedly confessed to the murder of 77-year-old Erik B. Stocker in Miami Beach.
“Mr. Gibson also made additional statements about his involvement in six other murders during earlier times in his life,” according to Ernesto Rodriguez of the Miami Beach Police Department. “He said these occurred in Florida, Georgia and California.”
Rodriguez told Patch that it is too early in the investigation to confirm whether the heavily tattooed Gibson was telling the truth but he has gotten the attention of detectives in this urban resort, where the decomposing body of Stocker was found on April 30 in his South Beach apartment.
“Our work with the other agencies is only just beginning and can take weeks if not months,” Rodriguez acknowledged on Thursday.
Police believe Stocker’s body had been in his apartment for at least 10 days before neighbors smelled a strong odor and called police. The apartment is located at the Tribeca Condominiums in the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue.
“Detectives quickly identified a suspect and determined that he was also wanted by the United States Marshals for a probation violation for failure to register as a sex offender,” Rodriguez said earlier.
But Miami Beach police are not yet prepared to confirm what Gibson told detectives with respect to his involvement in any other murders.
Detectives from Miami Beach arrived in New York last Friday to search for Gibson with the assistance of the New York Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.
“Based on the cooperative law enforcement effort, the suspect was located in Manhattan by NYPD transit police officers and taken into custody on Sunday, May 5,” said Rodriguez. “He struggled during the arrest and injured at least one officer.”
Gibson may also face charges in New York City for assaulting police officers during his arrest and for resisting arrest.
