BLOOMINGTON, IN — An Indianapolis man accused of forcing his way into musician John Mellencamp’s Bloomington home was arrested by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Thursday, the sheriff’s department said. According to the sheriff’s department, 48-year-old Robert Carter, of last known address 4800 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive, Indianapolis, faces burglary, residential entry and criminal trespass charges in Thursday morning’s incident.
The sheriff’s department said no one was home when Carter entered just after 6 a.m., prompting an alarm call to deputies. The sheriff’s department said deputies responded and found the security gate had been rammed open, and discovered a red Jeep Cherokee near the home. Once inside, deputies found Carter, who told them he was there to “arrest Mellencamp for supporting a government” which Carter doesn’t support, and also admitted to kicking in a door to the primary residence, the sheriff’s office said.
A Thursday post on John Mellencamp’s Twitter account indicates the musician was headed to South Bend that day to perform a few hours later during the opening night of his American Poet John Mellencamp Show Tour.
According to the sheriff’s department, Carter was arrested Tuesday in a seperate case for accusations of possessing of a handgun without a license, after his recent social media posts prompted law enforcement to be watchful of him. Carter was located by Bloomington Police who made contact with him and found the firearm, the sheriff’s department said.
According to the sheriff’s department, Carter was evaluated by mental health officials and was then taken to the Monroe County Correction Center for booking, but was released by the court Wednesday.
