MINNEAPOLIS — Winning the first eight bouts by bonus-point margins, the top-ranked Augsburg University wrestling team dominated in a 40-3 dual-meet victory over Concordia College-Moorhead on Thursday evening at Si Melby Hall.

The top-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, Augsburg dominated from start to finish in winning nine of 10 bouts, remaining unbeaten on the season in dual meets at 9-0. Augsburg built a commanding 37-0 lead with two pins, a technical fall and five major decisions.

No. 3-ranked 141-pounder David Flynn (JR, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) claimed his fifth pin of the season, improving to 12-1 on the season with a 6:28 pin of Concordia’s Bret Wilson. Flynn built an 8-0 lead before collecting the pin with 32 seconds left.

At 174, No. 5-ranked Tanner Vassar (JR, Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) improved to 9-3 on the season with his third pin of the season, a victory in 5:31 over Kaden Spindler after building an 8-2 lead. Of his nine wins, five are bonus-point wins (three pins, two technical falls).

No. 4-ranked 125-pounder Victor Gliva (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) opened the evening with a commanding performance, collecting three takedowns, two 4-point near-falls and 4:40 of riding time in a 16-1, technical-fall victory over Jake Nohre. Gliva is now 14-3 on the season, with nine bonus-point wins (five pins, one technical fall, three major decisions).

No. 4-ranked 133-pounder Sam Bennyhoff (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) improved to 12-1 on the year with his seventh bonus-point and fifth major-decision win, scoring a 15-5 triumph over Benjamin Bogart. Bennyhoff built 4:42 riding time in the bout, scoring three takedowns, a reversal, a four-point near-fall and two-point near-fall in the win.

Defending 157-pound Division III national champion Ryan Epps (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls HS), currently ranked No. 2 nationally, controlled his match from start to finish with Adam Jaeger, using five takedowns, a two-point near-fall and 4:01 riding time to improve to 19-1 on the season with a 15-2 major decision win. He is now 94-9 in his carer with 39 bonus-point wins (19 pins, six technical falls, 14 major decisions).

Top-ranked and defending 165-pound Division III national champion Lucas Jeske (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) remained unbeaten at 5-0 with an 11-2 major decision win over Travis Ostby. Four takedowns, a reversal and 2:13 riding time were enough for Jeske to collect his 50th career bonus-point victory (32 pins, six technical falls, 12 major decisions) in his 69-9 career with the Auggies.

No. 7-ranked 149-pounder Alex Wilson (SR, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS) improved to 19-2 on the season, scoring a takedown in each period and building 3:46 riding time in a 10-0 win over Ty Johnson. The win was Wilson’s eighth by major decision and his 14th bonus-point triumph of the season.

Rounding out the match, heavyweight Ethan Hofacker (JR, Spring Valley, Wis./Spring Valley HS) had a strong effort in a 5-1 win over Noah Carter, improving to 11-10 on the season. An early takedown and 2:24 riding time were the difference in the match for Hofacker.

The lone victory for the Cobbers came at 197, as Jacob Arends claimed a 6-3 win over Augsburg’s Wyatt Richardson (JR, Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow HS). Arends broke a 1-1 tie with a reversal six seconds into the third period, then used a takedown adn 1:40 riding time to clinch the win.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The win was Augsburg’s fifth in a row in the all-time series with Concordia. The Auggies are now 30-3 since the 1980-81 season against the Cobbers.
  • Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 336-51-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 47 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
  • Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 325-50-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 250-40-1 against Division III opponents.
  • Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is now 210-7 since the 1975-76 season.
