A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s (0-6 dual record) ran into a buzzsaw with three dual losses to nationally-ranked teams at Wisconsin-La Crosse last Saturday (Dec. 5). SJU started the day with a 36-3 loss to top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa), last year’s national runner-up, and followed that with a 27-12 loss to then-No. 19 Cornell (Iowa), who is now ranked eighth nationally. The Johnnies ended the day with a 45-0 loss to the host Eagles, who are ranked fourth nationally. Senior Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) earned SJU’s lone win, a 7-5 decision over No. 10 Kaz Onoo at 141 pounds, in the loss to Wartburg. He dropped his other two matches on the day and is now 10-5 on the year. Henle fell from fifth to sixth nationally by D3wrestle.com (Dec. 9) at 141 pounds.
An 18-0 deficit to start the dual against Cornell proved to be too much in the eventual 27-12 loss. Junior Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) broke the skid with a pin at 165 pounds and classmate Glenn Castro (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) added a 5-4 decision at 184. Erickson lost his other two matches by close scores, 3-0 and 8-6. Junior Colin Fisher (Eagan, Minn.) ended the dual with his first win, a 3-1 decision, at heavyweight. He joined the team this week following the Johnnies’ football season.
