Rennes manager Bruno Génésio did not hold back after his players lost a third consecutive Ligue 1 game away from home. Stade Rennais were defeated 2-1 at Lorient during the opening match of gameweek 20 on Friday night.
Les Merlus scored two first-half goals thanks to a free header achieved by centre-back Montassar Talbi and a powerful top-corner shot from Théo Le Bris, the nephew of Lorient manager Régis Le Bris. Rennes midfielder Flavien Tait halved the deficit in the second half but it was too late for the away side to mount a comeback.
Stade Rennais manager Genesio lamented his players’ start to the game as Lorient won second balls and duels all over the pitch in the first half. “When we are as ambitious as our club, we can’t just perform 45 minutes only,” said the former Lyon manager to L’Equipe. “We started the game like tourists. This is football, there are basics to follow. Whatever our formation is, it can’t work if we lose every duel and if we are unable to win the ball back.“
With their third away loss in a row, Rennes have failed to kick on following their gutsy home win against leaders PSG two weeks ago and remain in fifth place. Meanwhile, Lorient keep impressing this season with young coach Régis Le Bris at the helm. Les Merlus climb to the sixth place, sitting only two points behind Rennes.
