According to French investigative journalist Romain Molina, new AFC Bournemouth owner Bill Foley has entered discussions to acquire Ligue 1 club FC Lorient.

The American said originally that he was in exclusive negotiations to purchase a club in Belgium and France in order to create a multi club model ownership structure which has been a recent trend in the last 10 years, with specifically American investors dipping their funds into Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

Molina also reports that Foley was going to join in John Textor’s bid to purchase Lyon, which is still set to be officially finalised – yet he has gone his own direction and purchased Premier League side Bournemouth for €175M. With Bournemouth, and after Todd Boehly’s takeover of Chelsea last year, half of the Premier League clubs now have American shareholders. There is an increasing trend of American ownership in French football also, with notable clubs such as Marseille, Lyon, and Toulouse possessing US owners with the likes of Red Star FC, Nancy, and Troyes being part of multi-club projects.
