Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of a mid-week cup clash with Metz, Belgian and AS Monaco’s 19-year-old central midfielder Eliot Matazo discussed similarities in his game to ex-Lille and France defensive midfielder Rio Mavuba.

“I was very happy to be able to be a starter (Saturday, 4-0 Ligue 1 win over Metz). The absence of Aurélien Tchouaméni was a real blow to the team. I was very proud that the coach called upon me to support, it is a great show of confidence. I am happy with my performance and that of the team, I really enjoyed myself. I have not yet had the opportunity to speak with Niko Kovac but he knows very well that I am a calm boy and I am not going to become big headed. We have a squad with a fair amount of jokesters. Some felt that my playing style had similarities to Rio Mavuba, because I have quite a low centre of gravity notably. That is why they have given me this nickname.”
