Speaking in an interview with France Football earlier this week, ex-Arsenal and PSG manager Unai Emery sought to defend Kylian Mbappé in the face of increasing criticism of the Frenchman’s supposed selfishness and recent public displays of disrespect towards Thomas Tuchel and his team-mates as he remonstrated when being substituted off in a home fixture against Montpellier.

“It is a story about ego. Kylian, I know him, he is a good guy. But he is ambitious. This ego that comes out and appears publicly against the manager, that is not good for his image and it means that he cannot control his emotions. But deep down, it means that the player wants more, that he is a winner. I always prefer a player to be unhappy with me when he is not playing, because it means that he is a competitor.”
