The second half of the 2017-2018 season is a make or break one for the Parisian club. This is time of the season where football observers in France and across Europe will be expecting the club of the French capital to deliver in the important stages of the Champions League. In spite of a perfect run of results following the turn of the year, the club’s internal issues have been all the talk in France.
In early December, the South Americans asked the club to have their Christmas vacation extended in order to spend New Years together. Both parties agreed on a one-day extension from January 2nd to 3rd. Despite being amongst those who agreed on this return date to the club, Edinson Cavani arrived late, ultimately returning on the 5th of January.
Following Paris Saint-Germain’s wins against Rennes and Amiens in the league and French cup respectively, Thiago Silva spoke to the press, alluding to Cavani’s late arrival back to France, following the Uruguayan striker’s vacation in South America. An occurrence which has left a sour taste with PSG’s South American clan.
After their 6-1 win away from home against Rennes, Silva stated that Thiago Siva would have to work hard to earn his spot back in the team, and that the club would deal with situation in a way they see fit. “The club will do what is necessary (…) All the players who played against Rennes have proved they could be starters. Cavani will have to work hard to earn his spot back.”
The captain followed up by saying the club needed to stick together, and spoke to the player’s importance despite Cavani missing these last couple of matches. “He is an important player for us. He has always been a difference maker on the pitch. I do not know the exact problem. But we always stick by him.” The PSG forward is the club’s top scorer this season with 25 goals in all competitions.
However, in their cup tie against Amiens yesterday, which les Parisiens won 2-0, he spoke to this issue again, stating that Cavani needed to think before jeopardising the group with special favours and entitlement. As a result, Thiago Silva and the other South Americans in the dressing room are angry at Cavani and bothered by the striker’s actions, despite getting the necessary results in their cup matches without him.
The Argentinean midfielder Javier Pastore also returned late. Silva clarified that Javier Pastore’s absence from the group is not the same as Edinson Cavani’s because the Argentinean playmaker has asked to leave the club, but has called for everyone to remain professional and focused stating, “The difference between Pastore and Cavani is that I think that Pastore told the club he wanted to leave. Cavani is a bit different, but we must continue working and come back fast for the sake of the club.”
