There’s a lot to envy about Jennifer Lopez, and her hair color definitely falls into that category. Her golden brown, perfectly highlighted crown has remained consistently gorgeous through every style and stage of her career. Yes, a picture speaks a thousand words. But if you want to get J.Lo's look, it's better to hear the secrets of this color straight from the source. We spoke to colorist Tracey Cunningham, who has been working with Lopez for 15 years and creating her signature hue.

Cunningham describes J.Lo’s color as neither blonde nor brunette, but rather a happy middle ground between the two. “She’s always been a honey brown. Sometimes, I add in some more blonde highlights — that just blends in so well with the honey and light brown,” Cunningham tells Allure. She says that she loves going slightly lighter to complement J.Lo’s skin color. “Her skin is so perfect, creamy, and golden. The lighter colors add depth to her overall color,” Cunningham explains. If you look through old photos of J.Lo’s looks you’ll notice exactly what Cunningham confirms: The color has been pretty consistent.

Cunningham touches up Lopez's hue when it's needed, more often if she's filming. J.Lo's is a color that non-famous people can wear too, but Cunningham warns it comes with plenty of upkeep. "A color like [hers] does require maintenance and maintenance requires money,” she says. Cunningham suggests seeing a colorist for a refresh about every six weeks if you're wearing this honey brown.

According to Cunningham, J.Lo’s color works on any texture. But to keep hair healthy, especially if yours is on the drier side, have your colorist use the Olaplex system during your sesh. It’s what Cunningham uses pre- and post-color on J.Lo (and her other clients) to help rebuild the bonds in the hair that may have been broken during the coloring process.

In an Instagram post, Cunningham shared the exact formula used for J.Lo’s most recent touch-up. She started with Redken’s Flashlift Bonder Inside 30 volume mixed with a quarter ounce of Olaplex. Then she followed with a gloss on just the roots with Redken’s Shades EQ Demi-Permanent Hair Gloss in 09nb + 08gg, leaving it on for five minutes before rinsing. Next, she applied Olaplex No. 2 Bond Perfector, which is a professional size (the at-home equivalent is No. 3), and let it sit for 20 minutes before shampooing and conditioning. You can bring this formula to your colorist as a jumping-off point, but Cunningham says it's important that it be adjusted so the hue will complement your skin tone.
