A 40-year-old man has filed a lawsuit against his parents after they threw out his comprehensive collection of pornography and sex toys, which he says is worth nearly $29,000.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the man moved to Michigan in 2016 to live with his parents after going through a divorce and did chores around the house to cover his rent until he moved out 10 months later. But when his parents delivered his belongings to his new place in Indiana, he noticed boxes containing his pornography and sex toys were nowhere to be found.

When the man asked about the missing boxes in January 2018, his father informed him they were destroyed.

“I don’t think that you have been listening to me, so let me make this very clear. I do not possess your pornography,” the man’s father admitted in an email included in the lawsuit. “It is gone. It has been either destroyed or disposed of. I may well have missed a few items that are now in your possession but, at this point, if you don’t have it, it is gone. Ditto for your sex toys and smutty magazines.”

He added, “We counted twelve moving boxes full of pornography plus two boxes of ‘sex toys’ as you call them. We began that day the process of destroying them and it took quite a while to do so.”

Neither the man’s attorney, Miles Greengard, nor his father, had no comment to make on the lawsuit when reached by PEOPLE.

In a series of email exchanges, the man’s father insisted to have done his son a “big favor” by ridding him of the items, saying it would improve his emotional and mental wellbeing.

After the man tried to file charges against his parents for the destruction of his property, Ottawa County prosecutors declined to move forward with the case. Michigan’s Department of the Attorney General did not immediately respond when asked for comment by PEOPLE.

In an email sent to his father after charges were refused, the man accused his parents of acting “vindictively” in throwing away his collection.

“If you had a problem with my belongings, you should have stated that at the time and I would have gone elsewhere. Instead you choose to keep quiet and behave vindictively,” he wrote, according to the lawsuit.

The man is suing his parents for $86,822 in damages, nearly triple the amount he believes his collection was worth, the documents reveal.

In an email included in the lawsuit, his father expressed hope that his son would one day see the benefits of his actions.

“I would have done the same if I had found a kilo of crack cocaine,” he wrote in an email. “Someday, I hope you will understand.”
