UFC 201 – A King is Crowned
It was a thunderous punch that ended the reign of Robbie Lawler. As Tyron Woodley came to the ring last night, his entrance song blared, “…A king without a crown.” Nobody believed that, except for T-Wood. Hardly anyone gave “The Chosen One” a chance in his first title shot in the UFC. The odds were long on a T-Wood victory. However, in this year of dethronement, another king was defeated. Tyron Woodley is your new UFC 170 lb Welterweight Champion, and it only took him 2 minutes and 12 seconds, making it the fastest finish in UFC Welterweight Championship history.
The crowd stayed until the end. In the building, Robbie Lawler was a tremendous babyface, but by the show’s closing, everyone was cheering for Woodley. The Philips Arena was maybe 70% full at its peak, but nobody left early. I doubt there would have been much of a difference in total attendance had the scheduled Demetrius Johnson bout taken place as the main event of this show, but for certain, the people came to see Lawler vs. Woodley.
UFC 201 was action packed. It seemed to alternate between a close decision, and a fast knock out. In total there were five knock outs, including the fastest in UFC heavyweight history, one submission, and five decisions, including a majority draw.
Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs Rose Namajunas won fight of the night, while Jake Ellenberer and Tyron Woodley each won a performance bonus. All four fighters added 50,000 dollars to their purse.

Figure Four Weekly
READ IT HERE: Figure Four Weekly 7/25/2016: More concussion legality! – Just moments after last week’s issue was put to bed, news broke that WWE had been hit by yet another lawsuit from Massachusetts lawyer Konstantine Kyros against WWE. Before, there were of a small handful of wrestlers with no prospects of dealing with WWE again suing strictly over nebulously worded concussion-related claims. This time, there are over 50 plaintiffs, including a lot of surprises, and the counts have been expanded to include variations on misclassifying them as independent contractors as part of an alleged racketeering scheme.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter
READ IT HERE: August 1, 2016 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Brand split week one, Brock Lesnar and the WWE Wellness Policy – The entire story of Brock Lesnar, UFC drug testing, WWE drug testing and its history leads the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. There is also full coverage of week one of the brand extension, what has been good and what hasn’t, as well as coverage of Battleground, the G-1 Climax tournament, and the deaths of well known personalities on a regional basis like announcer Bill Cardille and Oregon advertising icon Tom Peterson.
The lead story explains in detail why Lesnar was not suspended, the changes in the policy where he can’t be suspended, who else has those loopholes, where they came from, why PED usage is more of a competitive advantage in WWE than in most real sports and why people who claim wrestling isn’t competition miss the entire point. There is also a look back to 2007 when a large percentage of the roster was suspended at the same time without test failures and why, including how office people have been treated different from talent on the subject. Take a look into specifics of the case of Randy Orton, performance vs. cosmetic in wrestling and how it has changed, how WWE differs from the other major promotions, when steroid testing started in WWF, when it was dropped and when it was restarted, a look back at the key component of the 1994 indictment of Vince McMahon and subsequent trial, and what happened and why WWF dropped drug testing.
A look back at the cases involving Eddy Guerrero and Chris Benoit, the success of the program all inside.
In this issue, take a look at Lesnar’s schedule, the situation with Paul Heyman, what the next steps for UFC and athletic commissions regarding the Lesnar test failures and the reaction to all this from Mark Hunt. This issue also looks at Hunt’s argument regarding how Lesnar gained financially from cheating and how Lesnar was not treated differently than anyone else when it came to drug testing in the UFC.
Finally, examine week one of the brand split, the changes in the SummerSlam show, Roman Reigns booking, the ascension of Dolph Ziggler and Finn Balor, as well as business notes and a match-by-match rundown of Battleground with star ratings.

Balor Says ‘Good-Bye’ to NXT
(Photo: Finn Balor looks out at the crowd during his NXT farewell last night in Houston)
Saturday night at the NXT house show in Houston, Finn Balor and others bid farewell to NXT as they are set to start full-time on the main roster. After the main event tag team match ended, Bayley came out to address the audience and one-by-one brought out everywhere headed up to the main roster. Besides Balor, she called out Mojo Rawley, Nia Jax and Carmela. They each got one more moment to shine in NXT. Here are results from the show and also a column on the artistry on display as it unfolded.
Balor thanked the fans, the wrestlers and he put over Matt Bloom in his farewell speech. He tweeted later that night, “’IF’ that was the last one.. It has been a beautiful 2 years. #NXTHouston #ThankYouNXT”.
SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE
Today is one year since the sudden death of Roddy Piper at the age of 61. Piper was one of the greatest wrestling characters of all-time and while he absolutely got his due at the time, historically in rewriters of history never got his fair due for the expansion of WWE in 1984-85 and the first WrestleMania show.
Today is also the 20th anniversary of Kurt Angle winning the Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling at 220 pounds in Atlanta in a very close match that could have gone either way. Angle had suffered a broken neck only a few months earlier so it was one of the more remarkable gold medal wins in wrestling history.
UFC 201 was the third most searched term on Google in the U.S. this past weekend with more than 500,000 searches. That would indicate the show didn’t bomb as badly as some had expected. Beating it were Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Book and Powerball. The biggest sub searches were Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley, UFC 201 results and Lawler vs. Woodley.
Judge Pamela Campbell ruled that Hulk Hogan could start seizing the assets of Gawker founder Nick Denton, claiming that he misled the court about the value of his company. Denton couldn’t raise the $50 million bond that was required to appeal the $140 million verdict awarded to Hogan, so he put up his stock in Gawker as collateral, telling the court it was worth $81 million. Campbell agreed to the terms until finding out the stock was worth $27 million. When Denton said the stock was worth $81 million, he was already preparing a bankruptcy filing and was selling the company for $90 million, and Denton owned one-third of the company. She ruled his stock value is not adequate for the bond and ruled if he can’t appeal, then Hogan could start collecting. Denton is looking for an emergency stay of the court order.

Some corrections on the CHIKARA notes from last weekend. Hype Rockwell & Race Jaxon were the tag team champions and lost a non-title match to Mustache Mountain. Los Ice Creams hit the ring to cash in their shot and pinned Jaxson to apparently win the title. However, since the title matches have to be 2 out of 3 falls, the ruling was it was not a title change and the titles are now held up. They claimed it was an error by the official. Also Kodama & Obariyon lost to Worker Ant & Silver Ant. (thanks to Michael Langan)
